As a horse exercises, its muscles demand more oxygen and nutrients. These are supplied by the circulatory system. Within the muscle, chemical reactions are taking place that release the energy needed for work. There are also chemical waste products that are produced that need to be carried away by the circulating blood. It is the accumulation of these waste chemicals that cause the fatigue and muscle sorness. It is the function of the liniment to help increase the circulation to aid the horse in removing these products of muscle metabolisim and return to normal conditions. Therefore a liniment needs to be made of components that have counterirritant properties. Counterirritants help speed the removal of the muscle's waste products that cause the soreness and fatigue. The blend of dentured grain alcohol, ox gall, camphor, hemlock oil, ammonium hydroxide, and gum turpentine quickly and gently acts to relieve discomfort.
